Does Shakeology make a difference?
Ok, I’ll be honest. I really resisted on the Shakeology for a long time. I’m sorry, but it seems like just another way for BeachBody to extract funds from its customers. Not that BeachBody does this, their products DO work! I whole-heartedly believe in the Results & Recovery formula and Peak Performance packs and have been using them regularly for quite some time. When I don’t use these supplements my performance suffers. I track all my workouts so it’s easy to confirm this by simply going back and looking at my tracking sheets. The numbers don’t lie. When I skip the recovery drink I feel a lot sorer and seem to have to drag myself through the remainder of the day. But, after a couple weeks of using it, my numbers are on a steady incline and I have plenty of energy to get through the day, even after “bringing it” during my workout.
So, the logic went like this:
- I am already using two BeachBody supplements and whole-heartedly believe in them.
- I trust BeachBody becuase I know their workout programs are world-class.
- BeachBody is marketing Shakeology as a game-changer.
- I think Shakeology might be a scam.
On Thursday Oct 27, I began having a chocolate Shakeology for breakfast. My first impression was how chocolaty this stuff tastes. Seriously, chocolate Shakeology has a really deep chocolate flavor, almost like chocolate ice cream. So Shakeology scores big points on the flavor meter, now I had to find out if it made a difference.
As I write this I’ve been on Shakeology for about a week. I’m not sure how to describe what Shakeology is doing for me, but I feel a little different. Just for reference, no one who knows me would describe me as being a happy person. Not that I’m a grump, just that I tend to be quiet and a bit on the stoic side. But in the past few days I have felt slightly happier, a bit more outgoing, and much more optimistic. Yeah, I said optimistic; and this is coming from a hard core cynic. I don’t know if Shakeology is solely responsible for this personality transformation or if it is a combination of factors; but I do know that SINCE I BEGAN USING SHAKEOLOGY I JUST FEEL BETTER!
After reading all of the positive thinking books, listening to endless podcasts, and visiting nearly every “ good vibe “ website on the Internet, it seems that it took the deliciously chocolate Shakeology to break through the previously impenetrable cynicism that enveloped my life. Score one for you Shakeology.

I just finished my first week of my RIPPED FOR X-MAS HYBRID ROUTINE.
Observations from week 1:

- Plyo Cardio Circuit is a bear on day six.
- Shoulders & Arms on day 5 was tough after working biceps and triceps on days 2 and 3.
- Plyo Legs is becoming one of my favorite One on One routines.
- I really need improvement on my yoga, Fountain of Youth felt good, but I struggled with some of it.
In week two I give the smaller muscle groups a break by only working them once each. There are no Insanity workouts this week, but P90X Plyometrics should be enough of a challenge. Killer Abs will increase the core intensity level for this week. I finish out the week with the 90 minute long Yoga X... ( I hate Yoga X, but I know how good it is for me ).
On to week 2.

RIPPED FOR X-MAS HYBRID ROUTINE
This ten week RIPPED FOR X-MAS Hybrid begins October 17.
This hybrid uses P90X, P90X plus, One on One, and Insanity workouts.
Phase I lasts four weeks and focuses on building muscle.
In weeks one and three the chest, back, and legs are worked one time; while shoulders and arms get worked twice. Kenpo plus and Plyo Cardio Circuit provide the cardio aspect, with Plyo Legs pitching in. Fountain of Youth yoga serves as a day of recovery. You'll work your core with Ab Ripper twice and Abs/Core Plus once in each of these two weeks.
Weeks two and four work each muscle group once. The cardio workouts are Plyometrics and Kenpo plus. The core intensity is picked up a bit with Killer Abs replacing one of the Ab Rippers from weeks one and three. Yoga is scheduled on day seven for flexibility and recovery.
The recovery week is Core Synergistics, Medicine Ball Core Cardio, Yoga, Fountain of Youth, and Kenpo plus with Abs/Core Plus for some extra core work.

Plyo-Bomb
This hybrid routine is designed to push the limits of your plyometric conditioning. Insanity Max Interval Plyo and P90X Plyometrics in the same week? If that wasn't enough, P90X+ Interval Plus is there to further test your conditioning. Back & Biceps and Chest, Shoulders & Triceps will keep you from losing upper body muscle tone. Three different ab routines: Cardio Abs, Abs/Core Plus, and Ab Ripper X will give your mid-section an intense workout. P90X/Insanity Max hybrid – Week 3
So, I’m finishing up week three of this hybrid. I have to say that I was feeling really gassed most of the week. These Insanity Max routines really drain me, but I am seeing improvement in both my appearance and performance, so it’s definitely worth the effort. I am seriously looking forward to my recovery week before continuing on my fitness journey with the next hybrid.
I’m going to change the diet back to the P90X phase 1 ratios of 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fat. I’m looking to build some muscle this round while continuing to lower the body fat.
Other changes for this round are the inclusion of P90X Recovery and Results formula after workouts, and P90X peak health multi-vitamin packs. I used a multi-vitamin and drank a protein shake after workouts in this round, but I still felt exhausted sometimes. The Recovery and Results formula should correct that and the peak health packs will provide the essential nutrients my body needs for the extreme workouts of this hybrid.
The next hybrid will be more resistance based. It will definitely include P90X Legs & Back, Chest/ Shoulders/ Triceps, Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X, Yoga X, and will sneak Core Synergistics in there occasionally. I’m probably going to back off the cardio a bit, no Insanity Max routines, but maybe Plyo Cardio Circuit and Cardio Abs. I will also have Abs/Core plus and Kenpo Plus from P90X Plus scheduled just for a bit of variety.
Instead of having an entire week dedicated to recovery I will have mini-recovery breaks included every other week and only one day of rest this cycle.

Diet adjustment for P90X/Insanity Hybrid routine
I’ve decided to increase my calories a bit by including an extra protein shake. I am still within my target ratios of 40% carbs, 30% fats, and 30% proteins, (+ or – 5%).
This is Friday’s, (Day 13), diet.

I am increasing my caloric intake to around 2200 for the remaining two weeks of this program. The increase in calories should give me enough energy to be able to push through the final week of Insanity Max workouts and leave me with plenty to bring it during the recovery week. My diet thus far has been really good and I can feel the remaining fat melting off my body. I feel lean, fast, and explosive. I can’t wait to see what the final results are. I had an initial goal of losing 4% body fat during this 28 day cycle. I will post final results along with before and after pictures on July 10, which will be the beginning of yet another 28 day cycle.

Nutritional supplements for P90X/Insanity hybrid routines
When I'm planning out a new hybrid routine I'm certain to include my nutritional needs for the upcoming cycle. I try to calculate my caloric needs, figure out the ratios that will help me to get the results I want, and then plan out a diet, shopping list, and some recipes that I can easily prepare. Planning out my diet this way helps me to stay on track without stressing out over what foods I'm allowed and having to decide what I'm eating on any particular day.
Another aspect of nutrition in supplements. I use a good protein powder for 1 or 2 protein shakes a day. I also use P90X Results and Recovery formula after a workout. Results and Recovery formula is a great tasting orange flavored drink that contains the optimal ratio of carbohydrates to proteins for post-workout replenishment.
Another supplement I use is the P90X Peak Health Vitamin Packs. P90X Peak Health vitamins are multivitamins that are loaded with all the vitamins, minerals, and amino-acids that your body will need to repair and rebuild the body tissue that is stressed during these intense workouts.
I know that when I skimp on my nutrition, especially supplements, my performance and my results suffer.

P90X/Insanity Max hybrid - Day 11-12
DAY 11 – YOGA X
Just for the record, I hate P90X Yoga. It’s 90 minutes long and even though I’ve seen improvement with in my flexibility and endurance, I still struggle with some of it. So why do I still do it? Because I know it’s so good for me. Yoga X stretches the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that have been being pounded on by the Insanity Max workouts. Don’t think for one second that you’ll be sitting with your legs crossed saying “oooooooooommmmmm” for 90 minutes. Nope, not with P90X Yoga X.
Yoga X begins with a quick warm up of 3 ashtanga sun salutations. These movement combinations get the blood flowing quickly. What follows is about 45 minutes of moving Yoga poses, that is, doing an ashtanga then going into a pose that is held for approximately 5 deep breaths. This is harder than it sounds. You repeat the ashtangas and move right into a different pose. The poses get increasingly more difficult as you progress through the workout until finally you are standing bent over at a right angle to the floor, balanced on one leg with the other leg extended behind you and your arms extended out in front of you.
This series of moving ashtangas is followed by 45 more minutes of balance postures, deep stretching, and of course, ab work. Like a lot of you, I rolled my eyes when I found out that Yoga was part of the P90X program, but after doing Yoga X I realize that nothing in this program should be taken lightly. Yoga X makes me sweat, makes me sore, and makes me want to quit sometimes. I hate it, but I love it.
DAY 12 – INSANE ABS – CARDIO POWER & RESISTANCE
I did Insane Abs first today. I completed all reps without taking a break until the very last move, plank balances. My entire mid-section felt taut all day long after this workout. Insane Abs is quickly becoming one of my favorite workouts
Cardio Power & Resistance was better today as well. I only took a few breaks of a couple seconds, and I really pushed throughout the entire workout. I really like the way this workout makes me feel when I’m finished.
